Michael Carrick brings out the best of Manchester United – Swansea vs Manchester United Review

After a disappointedly dull performance on Thursday night, Mourinho made plenty of changes to the team, and despite some surprising inclusions in the starting eleven, there was a huge improvement in the performance levels.

Carrick though was the main player to make an impact on the team and his record goes to show the influence he has in games, as he has a 100% record for every game he has started so far this season. With Carrick playing, the team creates more chances with his first thought always being to play the ball forward. Having him on the pitch also gives Pogba more freedom to do what he can do best, just like when he had Pirlo behind him at Juventus. It is a big shame that he is reaching the end of his career and so trying to find another player who can fill the role as well as Carrick does should be high up on Mourinho’s priority list.

However, even with the changes to the team, Summer signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan once again found himself out of the squad altogether. With Swansea being such a poor opposition and Mkhitaryan being the Bundesliga’s player of the season last year, it would have been a perfect opportunity for him to get some minutes on the pitch and try to regain some match fitness. There must therefore be a reason as to why he’s barely featured since joining, and although I don’t get to see what goes on behind the scenes at Manchester United, Mourinho’s post match interview suggests it’s an attitude problem, with Smalling and Shaw also seeming to be in the firing line. Whatever the reason, I do hope that Mourinho brings out the best in him and doesn’t waste yet another talent that has walked through the doors at Carrington.

To summarise, although Swansea were a very weak opposition, the overall performance from the team was much more promising than what we witnessed midweek and the inclusion of Carrick made all the difference by bringing out the best in Pogba.
